Let’s cross oceans, transcend borders, and follow the giant panda to embark on a marvelous journey around the world. The 20-episode bilingual documentary series Panda Stories covers Asia, Europe, Oceania, and North America. It vividly shows the living conditions of giant pandas living abroad and presents the enduring friendship and exchanges between China and other countries.

Guided by the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda, and jointly produced by Hunan TV and FAB World, Panda Stories focuses on the culture of giant pandas, and vividly shows the life experience and living environments of Chinese giant pandas residing abroad, as well as their emotional connection with humans, highlighting the profound concept of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

The “circle of friends” of giant pandas across the world

In the bamboo-surrounded habitat, giant pandas enjoy the fresh air and natural environment. Some of them munch on bamboo leaves leisurely, while others joyfully climb and play in the trees. The program meticulously captures and delicately presents the vivid scenes with a combination of animation and documentary, enabling viewers to know more about the real conditions of giant pandas living abroad.

In order to comprehensively show the world of giant pandas to the viewers, the program also invites experts and keepers from the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda to popularize the knowledge of giant pandas in an easy-to-understand way, including the adequate preparation before sending pandas abroad, how giant panda mothers take good care of their cubs, and the reasons for curious “stereotypic behaviors”.

Because of their adorable and cute look, rarity and rich cultural significance, giant pandas are loved by people all over the world, and have been seen as symbols of peace and friendship. Following Panda Apu, the first international image of Chinese giant pandas, in the documentary, we can see the care and friendliness shown by people from various countries towards giant pandas. In Belgium, the arrival of giant pandas Hao Hao and Xing Hui sparked a craze for giant pandas. A super “panda fan” created the Giant Panda Global Awards. It is hailed as the “Oscar of Giant Pandas” by panda fans around the world. In Japan, a man named Takahiro Takauji visited the zoo almost every day with extraordinary perseverance, to take photos of every wonderful moment of pandas including Xiang Xiang.

Join hands to continue to paint an ecological picture of giant panda conservation

People all around the world are working hard to create a favorable environment for the breeding and conservation of giant pandas. In the program, in order to welcome the lovely national treasures, Qatar has spent four years to build a luxury panda house. It covers an area of 120,000 square meters and costs up to 180 million Qatari riyals (about RMB 360 million yuan). In Singapore, giant pandas live in a carefully designed environment with lush bamboo forests, clear streams, green trees and boulders for them to explore and play in. There are even four different types of bamboo that are specifically cultivated for these pandas. The documentary uses vivid stories to call on people worldwide to give giant pandas more accurate and genuine care and attention, so as to create a better and more harmonious environment for the breeding and growth of giant pandas worldwide.

The healthy growth of giant pandas cannot be separated from the keepers who take care of them around the clock. This program records the story of Fu Bao, the first giant panda bred naturally in South Korea. Fu Bao has been treated as a princess by its keepers Jiang and Song since its birth. Keeper Song makes a variety of bamboo toys for it, such as bamboo glasses and bamboo guitar. In Indonesia, in order to enrich the life of Hu Chun and Cai Tao, the keepers rack their brains. They hang carrots from the bamboo branches to exercise their limbs, and make ice cakes for them on their birthdays. Giant pandas Ding Ding and Ru Yi are loved by all. The Russian panda keepers build snowmen and snowdrifts for them in the yard, so that they can enjoy rolling over in the snow. Over the years of companionship, these adorable national treasures have developed a deep emotional bond with their keepers which transcends species and national borders.

The documentary Panda Stories will use the overseas influence of Chinese giant pandas to convey the ideas of “harmonious coexistence between humans and nature” and “a community with a shared future for mankind” and tell the story of cultural and emotional exchanges between China and other countries using pandas as a medium. A new journey of discovery is about to begin!
