In 2015, the United Nations held the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit and made 2015 Declaration: Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which basically maps out a set of “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs). Inspired by scale and ambition of the Agenda and SDGs, Leung Tsz Tim oriented her career to Circular Economy.
The creativity, knowhow, technology and financial resources from all of society are necessary to achieve the SDGs in every context. Especially in Hong Kong, the disposal rate of waste is higher than those of other major cities and continues to increase. In the past 30 years, Hong Kong's municipal solid waste increased by 78% while the population grew by 32%. As to realize her career in circular economy, Leung Tsz Tim became project manager of Drink Without Waste (DWW), the core industry-led and cost-effective solution in Designing Hong Kong Ltd. Following instruction by Leung Tsz Tim, participants of the DWW project, including key players from the beverage producers and importers, retailers, resources management, institutions, and NGOs, have been undertaking voluntary schemes jointly and individually to reduce, redesign, recover and recycle packaging waste, including the construction of recycling factories, creating reliable return networks, and making beverage packaging recycling more efficient, which made development of a circular economy for single-use packaging in Hong Kong and provided a solid starting point for the entire community to take the city’s waste management regime to a new level.
In 2021, SOCAM Development Limited updated its strategy - the “Better Tomorrow Plan 2021-2030”, setting sustainability blueprint for the next ten years, and the ambitions and focus areas across three major pillars, namely: Economy, Environment and Community, guiding their efforts for adopting sustainable practices in all business operations. The plan is driven by long-term vision and targets as well as a new governance structure, which facilitates change at all levels within SOCAM. Not only to further her career and enhance contributions in circular economy, but also inspired and motivated by “Better Tomorrow Plan 2021-2030”, Leung Tsz Tim has been working as Corporate Development Officer in SOCAM since June 2021, and strives to minimize waste generation and eases the burden of landfills by virtue of recycling and upcycling.
The approaches and achievements under direction of Leung Tsz Tim are important steps as they move to actualize resources into a positive impact on the circular economy, environment and the community, and putting sustainability as part of long-term outlook in Hong Kong and other international regions.
